We, the undersigned, support a city ordinance banning the sale of foie gras in Austin. Foie gras—which literally means "fatty liver" in French—is produuced by force-feeding ducks until their livers swell to ten times their normal size. Metal feeding pipes are shoved down the ducks' throats three times a day as they struggle to get away, often leaving behind gaping, bloody wounds in the birds' necks. Many ducks become so sick from the process that they can't even walk. This cruel "delicacy" has no place in our city.
